August 19 Is Coming: Register for the September 16 Roofing Exam Now

Published August 15, 2026

If you're planning to take the September 16 Illinois roofing exam, the date that matters isn't September 16. It's August 19.

That's the registration deadline through Continental Testing Services. It's firm. No late registrations, no extensions, no "I'll do it this weekend." Once August 19 passes, September 16 is gone.

If you already registered, you're good. This post isn't for you — go study.

If you haven't, keep reading. Because missing this deadline isn't a two-week delay. It pushes everything back by a full exam cycle.

What Happens If You Miss August 19

The September 16 exam isn't a walk-in test. You can't show up at the door and ask for a seat. CTS closes registration on August 19, and that's it.

The next listed exam after September 16 is November 4, with a registration deadline of October 7. That's nearly two months of lost time — and that assumes you register for November the moment the window opens.

Here's why that matters beyond the exam itself. The licensing process is a sequence:

  1. Register and pass the exam.
  2. Submit your license application to IDFPR — you can't do this until you've passed.
  3. IDFPR processes your application.
  4. You get your license and can legally contract under your own name.

Miss August 19, and every step after that shifts right by a full cycle. If you were planning to be licensed and working by October, you're now looking at December or later. If you were aiming to be ready for spring bidding season, you've lost your runway.

And if you've already started studying for September 16, missing the deadline wastes that prep. You'll have to maintain that knowledge for another two months. Momentum fades. Life gets in the way. The material you were sharp on in August gets rusty by October.

We see this pattern constantly. People who delay one exam cycle often delay two — because the second time around, the urgency is gone and the study habit has evaporated. If you need a reality check on prep timelines, read our guide on how long to study for the Illinois roofing exam.

Register Before You Close This Tab

If you've decided to register, don't save it for later. Do it now. Here's the process:

  1. Go to the CTS Illinois roofing contractor page. That's continentaltesting.net — the official Continental Testing Services profession page for Illinois 105 Roofing Contractors. Not a third-party site. Not a "registration service." The real thing.
  2. Choose your exam type. Residential or Unlimited (Residential, Commercial and Industrial). If you're not sure which one you need, read our Residential vs. Unlimited comparison first — it's a 5-minute read that will save you from registering for the wrong exam.
  3. Complete the online application. You'll need your email address and identifying information. CTS uses this to locate or create your applicant record.
  4. Pay the exam fee. The current fee is $248 (subject to change — confirm the current amount on the CTS site). The fee is nonrefundable. If you register and don't show up, you don't get your money back.
  5. Save your confirmation. Print it, screenshot it, forward it to yourself. You'll need it if anything goes wrong.

Already registered for September 16? Make sure you know what to expect on exam day — check-in logistics, what to bring, what not to bring.

You're Registered. Now What?

You've got roughly four weeks to prepare for September 16. That's tight but doable — if you're disciplined.

If you failed a previous attempt and you're retaking the exam, CTS says not to reapply until you've received your Official Result Letter. Read our failed exam recovery guide for the retake process.

TL;DR — August 19 is the deadline that matters.
