September 16 Illinois Roofing Exam: Register by August 19 or Wait Until November

If you want to sit for the September 16 Illinois roofing contractor exam, do not put "register for the test" on your September calendar. By then, you will be too late.

Continental Testing Services currently lists August 19, 2026 as the registration deadline for the September 16, 2026 exam. Applications are available online through CTS, and the exam is offered in Hillside and Springfield.

The deadline is strictly enforced. Miss it and the next listed exam is November 4. That is not a disaster, but it is a seven-week delay that can push back your license, your ability to contract under your own company, and the work you planned to pursue this fall.

Why August 19 matters more than September 16

Exam day feels like the big date, but the application deadline controls whether exam day happens at all. Illinois roofing exams are scheduled on set dates. You cannot simply pick another appointment a few days later.

Waiting also creates a bad study pattern. People tell themselves they will register once they feel ready. Then they study inconsistently, the deadline passes, and they lose the date that would have forced them to prepare.

A better order is:

  1. Choose the correct exam.
  2. Submit the application before August 19.
  3. Use September 16 as a fixed target for your study plan.

Choose the right exam before you apply

CTS lists three Illinois roofing contractor examination options. The names matter because they determine the work your qualifying party is tested to supervise.

Residential

This is the limited roofing path for residential work. If your company plans to focus on homes and residential roofing systems, this is usually the relevant exam.

Commercial/Industrial

CTS states that you must pass the Residential exam before taking the Commercial/Industrial exam. Do not select this option as though it were a standalone first step.

Residential, Commercial and Industrial

This is the combined route for candidates pursuing the unlimited scope. It covers the residential foundation plus commercial and industrial roofing material.

How to register through Continental Testing Services

  1. Open the official Illinois 105 Roofing Contractors page. Use the CTS profession page, not a third-party registration site.
  2. Review the current schedule and instructions. Confirm the September 16 date, August 19 deadline, location, and fee.
  3. Select Apply Online. CTS asks for an individual email address and identifying information to locate or create your application.
  4. Choose your application status and exam type carefully. First-time and reapplying candidates follow different selections.
  5. Submit payment and save your confirmation. The current testing fee is $248 and CTS states that testing fees are nonrefundable.

What happens after you register?

The official IDFPR instruction sheet says candidates are mailed an admission notice approximately two weeks before the exam. If it has not arrived ten days before the test, contact Continental Testing Services.

Keep your confirmation and make sure the name, email, mailing address, exam type, and location are correct. Do not wait until the week of the test to discover that something is missing.

If you are reapplying after a failed attempt, CTS specifically says not to reapply until you have received your Official Result Letter.

Is six weeks enough time to prepare?

Yes—for a disciplined candidate, the time between August 19 and September 16 can still be useful. But there is no upside to waiting until the deadline to begin.

Field experience helps, but the exam also covers written rules and subjects that may not show up in your daily work: Illinois licensing law, business requirements, OSHA and safety, codes, estimating, and multiple roofing systems.
